 LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES IN

SPIRITUAL AND BEREAVEMENT CARE

CLINICAL PASTORAL EDUCATION AT BAYSTATE MEDICAL CENTER

CPE is an experience-based learning program which combines daily work in hospital ministry to patients, families, and staff with reflective learning in a small group setting.  The basic three-fold purpose of CPE at Baystate Medical Center is:

  1. to learn the skills of spiritual care

  2. to know and use theological and spiritual reflection in the practice of ministry

  3. to know and experience one’s self as a spiritual and pastoral person

All programs are tailored to the individual learning goals of the student.  We offer Level I and Level II CPE, and Supervisory Training.  Baystate’s CPE program is an accredited center of the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. (ACPE)

CPE SUMMER:  May 27, 2008 – August 13, 2008                        Tuition: $700.00

Summer CPE Program is designed primarily for seminarians, qualified lay persons and local religious leaders desiring skills refinement and exploring one’s gifts for the ministry.  The program will involve over 400 hours, of which at least 100 hours are devoted to the educational experiences comprised of theological reflection, didactics, small group process discussions and reflection of clinical material.  The curriculum integrates the experience of ministry with theology, personal history, behavioral sciences and spiritual development.

Residency:  September 4, 2007 – August 31, 2008

The Residency Program is a year-long, full-time professional training program designed for those who have already had at least one unit of CPE, have graduated from a Divinity School ( or equivalent), had have significant pastoral experience and desire to receive more specialized training toward certification as a chaplain. Our Residency Program at Baystate consists of three units including participation in the rotation of interfaith worship, on-call responsibilities and interdisciplinary team meetings.

The residency begins in early September, and ends the end of August the following year. CPE residents will receive a stipend of $ 24.000, parking and basic medical insurance. A deposit of $300 is required upon acceptance to the program and tuition for the following two units is $100 each.

Supervisory Training

Supervisory Training at Baystate Health  is a specialized educational program for qualified individuals who are passionate about teaching and spiritual care. This program is dedicated to training individuals in the art of supervision, and to prepare them for certification as an ACPE Supervisor in the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education. A year’s CPE residency is a prerequisite, along with other requirements.
